Multiple Defensive Systems

Using different half court and full court defenses to disrupt offenses

1. Make the other team think. If an offense doesn’t know what the defense is doing, the offense doesn’t know what IT is doing.

2. If the other team is thinking we are winning.

3. Communication. Changing defenses from a man to man to zone improves communication immediately. When going back to man after playing zone communication in man is often better.

4. Playing the same defense for long periods of time becomes mundane. Players like to mix up the game of basketball. Changing defense to a zone will make a man better when you come back to man defense, energy of the players goes up.

5. If you have 5 strong horses, just run the race. If you have some smaller ponies, a goat, couple of horses and a fox, you need to mix up the race, try and outsmart the other team of horses.

6. When a team begins rolling with a certain set or a certain drive or ball screen. A switch to Zone will slow them down.

7. If a player begins rolling and we can’t find a stopper, switching defenses can at times slow them way down.

8. Sometimes a zone will force uncomfortable or unfamiliar shots. Offenses see the zone as opportunity but they force the issue.

9. With the 30 second clock, mixing up defenses can take valuable time off the shot clock before the offensive team is set.

10.Defense creating several EASY scoring opportunities gives the offense a boost. Offenses are better and shooting improves with easy baskets.

11. Innovative. Our ball screen offense changed the league. Teams had to spend extra time preparing for it. Now, teams will have to spend precious time practicing for the changes.

12. We are not changing defenses every possession. We will be excellent at man to man defense. Changing defenses will depend on the flow of the game and matchups.

13. Players win games. But coaches have to put them in the best position. Sometimes better offensive players do better playing zone than man. I can not stand for having players guard someone they cannot. Play zone.
